Kim's Fall Classes

Hi everyone,

I thought I'd describe what I'm teaching in the fall to see if these classes/topics spark any ideas for collaboration. . .

LIB 5300: Readers' Advisory--involves the study of why we read (as adults), explorations of current mainstream and genre fiction (and movies, audiobooks, and ebooks), investigation of critical issues related to collection development and organization and the librarian's role in readers' advisory service, and some role-play scenarios in which students use pathfinders and readers' advisory tools to conduct RA interviews with library patrons.

LIB 5195: Critical Issues in Literature and Media for Youth--this will be a brand-new course for us and it's pretty much a blank slate right now. It's intended to be an in-depth study of youth literature and media that asks students to think critically about how these materials depict various social groups and the complex messages they convey to young readers as well as to reflect on their roles in the collection, promotion, and advocacy of all types of literature and media. Anyone teaching something that would intersect wtih a course like this?

LIB 5010: Collection Development and Management--involves the study of building and maintaining public and school media center collections and includes explorations of issues relating to censorship, the freedom to read, and copyright. I think that Amy Cheney and I might be joining forces in an activity dealing with challenges to web access in schools. Still in the planning stages.

Thanks for reading,
Kim

Cross-Program Collaborations - IDEAS

Don't forget to post your ideas of ways we can work together across programs. Several examples were mentioned at our last meeting: case studies, shared readings, change game, book challenges, budgeting decisions, etc.

What specific assignments or projects do YOU have planned for this summer or next fall that doing across programs would make for a more rewarding and enriching experience for your students? Please post your ideas here so we can continue the conversation at our next meeting in February.

Hi Everyone,

Here's the blog that's set up for our AET Zone Working Group. Each of the invited authors will be able to post whatever they're thinking about in terms of AET Zone issues. In order to automatically receive updates from this, you'll need to add this blog to your RSS feed. Anyone who might need help with that, just let me know.
